The Soft-Focus Liner Is the Only Eye Trick You Need This Season

Forget razor-sharp wings. Smudged, diffused and a little undone is the most flattering way to define your eyes.

A perfect cat-eye is a beautiful thing — and a stressful one at 8 a.m. The soft-focus liner trades precision for atmosphere. It's forgiving, it suits every eye shape, and it looks better as the day goes on, not worse.

Choose the right tool

Pencils are your friend here. A creamy kohl or gel pencil glides without tugging and stays movable for a minute or two, which is exactly the window you need to blend. Skip liquid liners for this look; they set too fast.

The technique

  1. Warm the tip. Draw a couple of lines on the back of your hand so the pencil glides.
  2. Stay close to the lashes. Wiggle the pencil along the upper lash line, pressing it into the roots rather than drawing a line above them.
  3. Smudge immediately. Use a small, dense brush — or a fingertip — to soften the line upwards and outwards.
  4. Lift the outer corner. Flick the smudge slightly toward the tail of your brow. Think suggestion, not wing.
  5. Set it. Press a matching eyeshadow over the top with the same brush to lock everything in place.

Precision is optional. Intention isn't.

Colour beyond black

Deep brown is softer on fair skin and blonde lashes. Plum makes green and hazel eyes glow, navy brightens the whites of the eyes, and bronze looks incredible on deeper skin tones.
